the art: place based design
We help envision the built environment to create vibrant, sustainable places.
Context sensitive design, complete streets and transit-oriented development are moving into the planning mainstream for good reasons. They are transforming auto-centric patterns by recognizing the need for balance among travel modes. Auto speeds are reduced, greater proportions of the right of way are used for non-auto modes and adjacent development intensities increased.
We have a unique niche in the art of multimodal planning, with a focus on defining the proper context and balance for differing multimodal design treatments. Our work on the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation’s Multimodal Design Guidelines exemplifies our niche. The Guidelines are organized by context setting development place types and by connecting multimodal networks. Similarly, freight design guidelines prepared for the Florida Department of Transportation, such as turn radii, vary by the surrounding development context.
